Financial weight at a glance

 

The fourteenth replenishment of IDA’s resources (IDA14) on April 18, 2005 will made available $34 billion to the world’s 81 poorest countries during the next three years IDA14 Replenishment

Type of funds provided: Grants

 

long-term interest-free loans (credits) and grants
- IDA’s long-term interest-free loans pay for programs that build the policies, institutions, infrastructure and human capital needed for equitable and environmentally sustainable development
- IDA’s grants go to poor countries already vulnerable to debt or confronting the ravages of HIV/AIDS or natural disasters.

Donors: United States, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Canada and Italy, Turkey and Korea, for example, once IDA borrowers, are now donors.

Standard procedure in brief

 

The main factor that determines the allocation of IDA resources among eligible countries is each country's performance in implementing policies that promote economic growth and poverty reduction. Per capita income is also a determinant, with the poorest of the eligible countries receiving higher allocations for a given performance level.

Activities funded

 

Technical Assistance and projects - Capacity building - Institutional enhancement through expertise, studies, workshops and training. IDA’s support for projects aims at human development and poverty alleviation such as education, health, social safety nets, water supply and sanitation (44%), infrastructure (26%), and agriculture and rural development (11%). Main fields concerned: Financial sector strengthening, corporate governance and public governance, social and environmental protection.

Priorities to specifically consider for cities

 

Social inclusion and poverty alleviation, environment protection in some cases (Thailand) IDA is now the single largest source of donor funds for basic social services in the poorest countries.
