Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF)

Implementing organisations

 

The Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF) is funded by the Government of Japan and administered by the World Bank

Financial weight at a glance

 

As of March 2005, the Government of Japan had provided over US$250 million to the JSDF and over 160 grants, amounting to more than US$180 million, had been approved.
The minimum grant size is US$ 50,000 and the maximum is US$ 2,000,000
(Up to US$ 3 million may be allowed but only under exceptional circumstances)

Standard procedure in brief

 

Grants are submitted on the basis of a standard one-page Funding Proposal to the JSDF Steering Committee through the Japan Trust Funds Administration Unit and then must be approved by the Government of Japan (GOJ)

Co-financing / required partnership

 

Grants must support and be linked to WBG strategies and financed operations / Partnership with local communities and Civil Society organisations

Activities funded

 

Innovative programs which directly respond to the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable groups in society; Provide rapid and demonstrable benefits, which can be sustained, to the poorest and most vulnerable groups; Build capacity, participation and empowerment of civil society, local communities and NGOs

Social inclusion, poverty alleviation, relief of economic and financial crisis

Urban sectors concerned

 

None especially except for social sector through governance strengthening, and poverty alleviation

Eligible countries in Asia

 

Approximately 50 percent of total JSDF funds should go to eligible countries in East, South and Central Asia that are WBG borrowers.

Low income and lower middle income World Bank Group (WBG) client countries.
